Town of Carmanville

Newsletter # 9 - November 2013

Fall is upon us again and a new Council is in place for the next 4 years.  Only 7 people came forward to be nominated this year so there was no election.  All 7 candidates were acclaimed.  Ross Collins decided not to run for Council this year and all members would like to thank Ross for his contribution to this community during the past 4 years.

Your new Council consist of:

Mayor                         Keith Howell

Deputy Mayor           Marlene Peddle

Councillors:                Dale Howell

Kim Blackwood

Sam Winsor

Michel Bailet

Linda Bailet

We would like to welcome Michel Bailet to Council and we all look forward to working with him to improve this community.

At this time, Council and Staff wish to extend a Season's Greetings to all our residents.

Following is a list of Christmas events that are planned for our community:

Dec. 13th - Town's Annual Tree Lighting

Dec. 14th - Rec - Kids Christmas Party

Dec. 14th - Fire Dept. - Santa Claus Parade

Details on each of these events will be posted on our website, in Stores and at the Post Office.

During the past year we hired Mark Parsons to develop a new town website:  townofcarmanville.ca.  Mark currently works a couple of hours a week to publish the Town Meeting Minutes as they are adopted and further develop the website.  The Minutes are located under the Council tab.  We will also be posting notices that are relevant to the community on this website such as Boil Orders, Clean up dates, Festival events, etc.  News and Events will be located under the Community tab.

The town is participating in a Take Charge challenge for a chance to win money for our community.  The competition will be coordinated by our Deputy Mayor, Marlene Peddle and we hope you will participate and help us achieve our goal.  Details of the challenge will be forthcoming on our town website under the News and Events section.

We encourage you to visit our website and check out the information available. We also wish to thank Mark for his expertise and ongoing assistance with our website.

On September 6th and 7th, we hosted a SAM Convention in our town.  This convention brought members of the Stewardship Association of Municipalities from all over Newfoundland and Labrador to our community.  This association consist of all the towns in NL that have signed stewardship agreements with the government to preserve the natural habitats located in their town boundaries such as Carmanville Pond and Middle Arm.  We wish to thank everyone who donated to this convention.  The Convention was a huge success and everyone enjoyed their stay in our community.

With the fire ban being lifted at this time of year, we'd like to remind everyone that if you have materials to burn please make sure they are not items that will emit toxic fumes.  A list of items that are prohibited from burning can be obtained through the town office.

New Year's Eve is fast approaching and we would like to remind everyone that if you are planning to shoot off fireworks, that only family fireworks can be fired without the town's approval in writing and the appropriate safety precautions in place.

When you see a fire hydrant that is opened, please do not attempt to turn it off.  If it has been opened, it was opened for a purpose by our Town Worker. Also, a reminder that all request for Snow Clearing and Loader Hire must go through the Town Office -534-2814.

Thank you for your cooperation in all of the above matters.

Fire Department

Our new Acting Fire Chief is Nathanael White.  We are always looking for new members.  Residents from either of the three communities we now serve are welcome to join our Fire Department.

With winter fast approaching, the Fire Department is reminding everyone that all heating systems and chimneys should be checked and cleaned.  This is also a good time to check your smoke detector.

On November 16th, the Pentecostal Church held a Gospel Sing-A-long.  The proceeds from a special collection and a donation from the Board totalling $1,000.00 was presented to the Fire Department.  Council and the Fire Department members wish to extend their thanks to each member of the church for their generosity and prayers. Athank you".

As in previous years, the Fire Department have solicited donations from various businesses to help offset the expenses from the Santa Claus Parade.  Thank you to everyone that has contributed to date: Harbour Authority, Hamilton Sound Credit Union, Carmanville Terrace, Tulk's Home Hardware, Davis Clover Farm, Bonnie's Hair Loft, Shopper's Drug Mart, C & M Crafts and Hair Etcetera.

Recreation Committee

As you are all aware, our Rec Center has been under construction this past year.  It has taken longer than we anticipated but that hasn't stopped us.  We have had a successful Summer Program and Summer Festival, a Spooktacular Halloween party for the kids and a great Halloween Bingo night for the adults with amazing costumes.  Our future plans are to have our center up and running bigger and better within the next year.

Habitat

The Carmanville Habitat Committee held its AGM in July.  The new executive is: Chairperson - Linda Bailet; Vice Chair - Dave Goodyear; Treasurer - Dianne Goodyear and Secretary - Cheryl Blackwood.

We had a successful summer on the trail with 4 students hired to maintain the trail and operate the Interp. Center.  Many visitors from all over Canada and other countries took the time to visit the trail and tour the building.  We currently have workers through a Community Enhancement Program doing routine trail maintenance.

We would like to thank Mr. Fred Greene for the completion of a beautiful new sign which has been placed in the parking lot in front of the Interpretation Center.

With the beautiful fall weather we have been experiencing many people are continuing to walk the trail daily.  With winter approaching we encourage people to enjoy the trail with snowshoeing or cross country skiing.

From all of us to each of you:

Merry Christmas

and

Happy New Year
